The AI shelf
When shoppers ask AI what to buy, are you on the shelf?
AI shopping assistants recommend a handful of products and skip the rest. Ghost Watch shows who they recommend for the questions your customers ask, and why that changes.
What’s changing
A shelf with three spaces and no page two.
Search shows ten links and lets shoppers compare. An AI assistant answers with a short list and a reason for each pick. If you’re not on that list, most shoppers never hear of you, and nothing in your analytics tells you a sale was lost.
It’s early, but it’s growing fast: Adobe measured generative AI traffic to US retail sites up 693% year over year in the 2025 holiday season, from a small base (Adobe, January 2026).
Ten links, many visits
Shoppers click through, compare, and you can see them in your analytics.
Three picks and a reason
The assistant compares for the shopper. You only see the visit if you were picked.
What we measure
Your share of the AI shelf, and the reasons behind it.
For each shopping question you choose, Ghost Watch asks the major assistants several times and records what they say.
How often you’re picked
The share of answers that recommend you, and where you rank, for each question and each assistant.
Which competitors take your place
The brands recommended instead of you, tracked over time, so you see who’s gaining.
Why the assistant chose them
The reasons it gives (price, reviews, a feature) and the pages it cites, so you know what to change.
What makes Ghost Watch different
AI answers next to the moves that changed them.
Other tools can tell you that you dropped out of an answer. Ghost Watch also watches your competitors’ prices, promotions and launches, so it can show what happened just before, and what you can do about it.
ChatGPT stopped recommending you for “best waterproof hiking jacket under $200”.
You were picked in 7 of 10 answers last week and 2 of 10 this week. Northpass took your place two days after cutting its price from $189 to $159 and adding free returns.
| Assistant | Last week | This week |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 7 of 10 | 2 of 10 (down) |
| Perplexity | 6 of 10 | 6 of 10 |
| Gemini | 4 of 10 | 3 of 10 (down) |
Suggested next step: answers cite price and returns. Consider matching free returns, and make sure your product page states your return policy clearly.
Ready for agents, too
Being recommended is half of it. Being bought is the other half.
AI agents are starting to complete purchases for shoppers. Our sister product, Ghost Agent Labs, tests whether agents can actually find, understand and buy from your store, and shows what to fix.

Questions
About the AI shelf
What is the AI shelf?
The short list of products an AI assistant recommends when a shopper asks what to buy. Like a store shelf, it has room for only a few products, and the ones not on it rarely get chosen.
Don’t other tools already track AI answers?
Yes. Several AI-visibility tools track whether assistants mention your brand, and some track shopping answers. Ghost Watch is different because it puts those answers next to your competitors’ prices, promotions and launches, so you can see why a recommendation changed and what to do about it.
Which assistants will you check?
We plan to start with ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and add others as shoppers adopt them.
Can I choose the questions?
Yes. You pick the shopping questions that matter to you, such as “best trail running shoe under $130”, and we suggest more based on your products.
Do AI answers change from one person to the next?
They can, so we ask each question several times and report how often each brand is recommended, rather than trusting a single answer.
